Putting Together a Good Shelf of Malt Whisky
(Within the Means of the Common Man)
Our current shelf is influenced by our need to keep up on the latest version of many core expressions. The pallets involved in the tastings that lead to the main reviews are not always in agreement, but that helps keep the minds open.
So, in terms of what I, the man whose page this is, truly prefers over all others, the following list will give you some idea of where I am coming from.
The ideal shelf of 6 varieties of single malt whisky:
Highland Park 12 – favorite all-arounder
Ardbeg 10 – favorite Islay smoke monster (runner up: Bowmore 12)
Oban 14 – favorite smoky mainland malt (runner up: Springbank 12)
Glen Garioch 12 – new favorite all around Highlander (runner up: Royal Lochnagar)
Clynelish 14 – favorite bourbon-heavy single malt (runner up: Glenmorangie 10)
Macallan 12 – favorite basic Speysider (runner up: Glenfarclas 12)
Worth the extra money
to open the door to serious malt whisky and make your way up to the first landing:
Springbank 15 – peat and sherry (runner up: Lagavulin 16)
Glenfarclas 17 – hardcore sherry (runner up: Aberlour A’bunadh)
Highland Park 18 – the best of all worlds
Talisker Distillers Edition – extra special treat, peaty bourbon islander finished in sherry (runner up: Ardbeg Corryvreckan)
Long Lost Favorites:
Balvenie Classic (1980s)
Bowmore 17 (1990s)
Lagavulin 12 (1980s)
The best malt whisky I ever had:
Springbank 21 (1980s)
Macallan 25 (early 1990s)
Highland Park 30 (2012)
Your “shelf” was impressive when I last visited (after the LIAB show than HS’s at Freddy’s). The current shelf is such that I don’t think we’ll have time for all the bands!
Well thank you. I it is a tough job, but someone has to do it.
Nice to hear from you again.
